Exam widget

The exam widget is a useful tool for quizzing, tracking users' development, and final exams.

Updated this week

The Exam widget is a tool that allows admin users to create a customised exam for the participants. The exam can be graded with points, and a specific score can be chosen for passing the exam. It is fully customisable to your needs and easy to use.

If you're looking for information about the old Exam (now called "Exam Question"), see this article.

Note: Unlike the old exam, you can now add all questions in a single widget and there are multiple different question types, allowing for more flexibility!

Editing the widget

  1. Fill in the title and additional information about the exam

  2. Press "Add question" and select question type

Questions

There are six different question types: single choice, multiple choice, true/false, sorting, text, and number. Below is an explanation for each type along with examples.

Note: randomising the order of answer options for each participant and other useful choices can be made in advanced settings, which we cover after question types & result options in this article!

Single choice

With this question type, you can ask a question that has multiple answer options, out of which there is only one correct answer. To create a single-choice question:

  1. Press "Add option"

  2. Select "Single choice"

  3. Fill in the question you want to ask in the title field

    1. You may also give additional instructions or context in the description field,

    2. Attach a file for additional context. Common file formats are supported, so you may attach for example a PDF, video, an image, or an audio file.

  4. Add as many answer options as you want, and give each answer option a title

  5. Tick the circle next to an answer option to mark it as the correct one

  6. Save.

And here's how the same question looks to a participant:

Multiple choice

With this question type, you can ask a question that has multiple answer options, out of which one or more are correct. To create a multiple-choice question:

  1. Press "Add option"

  2. Select "Multiple choice"

  5. Tick the circle next to an answer option to mark it as the correct one. You may mark one or more options as correct.

  6. Save.

And here's how the same question looks to a participant:

True/false

In practice, this is a preset for a single-choice question, providing you a faster way to set up a true/false question. To create one:

  1. Press "Add option"

  2. Select "True/False"

  3. Fill in the question you want to ask in the title field

    1. You may also give additional instructions or context in the description field,

    2. Attach a file for additional context. Common file formats are supported, so you may attach for example a PDF, video, an image, or an audio file.

  4. There can only be two answer options. Titles are pre-filled as "true" and "false" or the equivalent in your selected workspace language, but you may edit them.

  5. Tick the circle next to an answer option to mark it as the correct one

  6. Save.

Sorting

This question type allows you to give participants a number of options, which they need to drag in the correct order. To create a sorting-type question:

  1. Press "Add option"

  2. Select "Sorting"

  3. Fill in the question you want to ask in the title field

    1. You may also give additional instructions or context in the description field,

    2. Attach a file for additional context. Common file formats are supported, so you may attach for example a PDF, video, an image, or an audio file.

  4. Add the number of options you want, and give each of the options a title

  5. Sort the options in the order that provides the correct answer

  6. Save.

Note: with this question type, the order of answer options participants see will be randomised regardless of the widget-level advanced setting.

And here's how the same question looks to a participant:

Text

This question type allows you to ask a question where answer options are not given to participants, but they must answer by text, and the correct answer is given in settings. To create one:

  1. Press "Add option"

  2. Select "Text"

  3. Fill in the question you want to ask in the title field

    1. You may also give additional instructions or context in the description field,

    2. Attach a file for additional context. Common file formats are supported, so you may attach for example a PDF, video, an image, or an audio file.

  4. Define the correct answer

  5. Save.

Note: to get full points, a participant's answer must match the correct answer exactly - but capitalisation doesn't matter.

And here's how the same question looks to a participant:

Number

This question type is similar to text (explained above), but the correct answer is a number. To create one:

  1. Press "Add option"

  2. Select "Number"

  3. Fill in the question you want to ask in the title field

    1. You may also give additional instructions or context in the description field,

    2. Attach a file for additional context. Common file formats are supported, so you may attach for example a PDF, video, an image, or an audio file.

  4. Define the correct answer

  5. Save.

Results

Here, you can do two main things: set a minimum required score, and create "cards" to be shown to participants when they pass or fail the exam.

Minimum score to pass the exam is defined as a percentage, the value must be between 0 to 100, and it must be an integer, meaning that decimals are not allowed.

Passed/failed title and description

You can create "cards" to be shown when a user passes or fails the exam. You can add a title, description, as well as attach a file, for example some image to accompany the message. The cards appear at the top of the widget after a participant submits their answers.

Here's how the cards might look in edit view:

And here's how they look to a participant:

Advanced settings

There are two main categories of options here: question options & result options.

Question options

  • Show questions one by one: as the name suggests, you can choose to show each question one-by-one.

    • You can also opt to show participants how far they've progressed in the exam. This is how it might look:

  • Timed exam: you can choose to limit the time participants have to complete the exam. Time is defined as full minutes and needs to be at least one minute.

    • Enabling this option will add a default explanation to the start of the exam+a start button, but you can also add additional information in the description field.

    • Please note that exam description, if any, will be shown first, then the standard timer-related message, and then additional description for the timer if needed

This is how a timed exam might look in settings:

And to a participant:

  • Randomise question order does what it says - question order is randomised for each participant.

  • Randomise option order also does what it says - the order of answer options under each question is randomised for each participant.

    • Please note that for question type "Sorting" options are randomised regardless of this setting.

Result options

Here you can choose whether or not you want to show results after answering, and in that view:

  • Show score: shows participants their total score, where one question equals one point. The number is shown in the pass/fail card that can be edited behind the title "results" in Exam widget settings.

  • Show my answers: enabling this option displays each question and the participant's answer to it under the result card.

  • Show correct answers: this shows which answers were right/wrong for each question. Note that while it is possible to show correct answers and not display own answers, in most cases we recommend displaying both, as shown below:

  • Allow retry attempts: as the name states, you can allow participants to try again. Please note that clicking "try again" will erase earlier answers, so the participant has to complete the exam again even if they passed before. To avoid this situation you could:

    • Allow retry only on exam failure. You can also

    • Limit the number of retry attempts: here, you can set the number of times a participant is allowed to try again, after which the button is disabled for them.

Who can edit

You can also allow participants to edit the widget by adding their names or email addresses in the "Who can edit" section. Instead of listing individual participants, you can give edit rights to entire userlists.

Widget styles

You can edit the appearance of the widget with Widget styles! More information about Widget styles can be found in this article.
