Howspace Translations

The workspace translation feature and how it works.

Updated over 2 months ago

Howspace Translations allow multilingual use of workspaces. Each participant can choose their preferred language from the list of available languages and participate in their own language. The translations feature is provided by 3rd party DeepL.com service. The translations feature makes it possible to read content in your own language. Translations affect all content that can be written by participants and admins.

Howspace Translations are available for the Business plan and above. The feature needs to be enabled via workspace settings (Features > Translations). After that, each participant may select what translation language they wish to use when they visit a workspace.

To change the language, each user has to click on the Language icon in the "Me" menu in the top right corner. The language can be changed or disabled by each user at any time, and the change only affects that one user.

Supported languages are visible through the user interface. The translations feature supports the following languages: English (American), Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (Simplified), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Estonian, Farsi (Persian), Filipino, Finnish, French (Canadian), French (Standard), German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Norwegian, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Portuguese (European), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Somali, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

The translations (for most of the languages) are provided by a 3rd party service DeepL.com and require data to be transferred. Some of the translated languages are processed through Amazon AWS translate service, and in these cases, no data is sent to DeepL.

In practice, this means that any translated text (such as a comment or a reply) will be sent to DeepL-hosted servers from Howspace through a secure connection. DeepL will return the translated text and delete it from their database. You have the possibility to define if your translations are using DeepL or AWS in the main user dashboard. If you choose to use AWS, the data will not be sent outside Howspace, but the quality of the translations may be lower.
